Abandoned Houses in Japan
These are all abandoned houses in Japan, known as “ghost houses’ or “Akiya”. It is estimated there are over 8 million unoccupied houses in Japan, most in rural areas.
The huge number of these vacant properties is attributed to population decline and many people relocating to cities.
One method of helping solve the issue has been the creation of Akiya banks, which offer the houses to purchase at low rates and with a simplified buying process.
